Charlotte FC's Daniel Ríos named Week 33 Continental Player of the Week

We feel more confident knowing we have a goalkeeper like him in the back. The saves he made against Atlanta, Galaxy, and D.C were amazing. “As an expansion team it is difficult in the first season, mostly because most of the guys are new, everything on the team is new. It’s about adapting and knowing each other on the field, the final goal is to win games and win the championship.

Rios is the 14th Dynamo Academy alumnus to sign a Homegrown Player contract, and the second-youngest to sign after Juan Castilla signed on June 15. The Houston native and US youth international joined the academy in 2013 as a 10-year-old and was one of four academy players chosen by Tab Ramos to join the first team in preseason a year ago. “I want to score goals, that’s what I want, I really want to score goals. I’m the type of player that if I have to do defensive duties, or maybe make runs in behind and cross and not be the guy to score goals, I will do it. Rios, 27, was the first player Nashville ever signed to an MLS contract. Injuries have limited the Mexico native's opportunities over the club's first two seasons, with five goals and one assist in 30 appearances (13 starts).

Charlotte interim coach Christian Lattanzio said he didn’t change the game plan due to the switch but did give Sisniega the freedom to play the ball under his possession – after a save or on a goal kick – as he felt comfortable. No one in the crowd of 43,860 or watching at home would have dared suggest that Charlotte would paste Philadelphia with their worst loss – only their fifth of the season – 4-0. Or that Daniel Rios, with two goals and one assist in 24 appearances this season, would achieve the Crown’s first-ever hat trick and whatever you call a 4-goal game. The center forward joins Charlotte as the expansion side looks to reinforce their attack.

They came into the match even on points (64) with LAFC and eager for three more in their pursuit of the Supporters Shield, which goes to the team with the most at the end of the regular season. Despite taking five corner kicks, Philadelphia didn't have many scoring chances. Additionally, Nashville SC will receive 10% of any future transfer fee outside of Major League Soccer. “I think we are doing on the field what the fans expect from us.

Columbus Crew soar to historic Champions Cup final berth: "One more"

Rather than follow that pattern, most of Sisniega’s distribution was more direct, sometimes long balls that had to be won or with mid-range targeted throws and kicks that found his teammates on the flanks. If the Union had planned on victimizing Charlotte with a high press, they never really got the chance. “The game plan wasn’t changed when Kristijan was (ruled) out because we are blessed to have a good set of goalkeepers, really good,” Lattanzio said.

The 27-year-old Mexican, acquired in an early-season trade from Nashville SC, is the 13th different player in MLS history to score at least four goals in a single game. Ríos’ four-goal performance was the first by a player on an expansion team in their inaugural season in MLS history, and his six goals on the season are the second most by a Charlotte player (Swiderski, 10). Under both former head coach Miguel Angel Ramierez as well as Lattanzio, Charlotte has made a habit, as so many teams do now, to play the ball closely to the defenders and then work out of the back with targeted passes.

Ríos scored all four goals in Charlotte’s 4-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union, preventing the Eastern Conference leaders from staying in Supporters’ Shield contention and keeping their own Audi 2022 MLS Cup Playoffs hopes ticking. One week after Karol Swiderski took home MLS Player of the Week presented by Continental Tire honors, forward Daniel Ríos has earned the same award following a four-goal showing in Week 33.

Daniel Rios' grand: Four-goal outburst powers signature win for Charlotte FC

There will be added intrigue as players not on the roster or dressed for that game in July will not be eligible for selection in the completion of the game. Daniel Rios scored all four goals and Charlotte FC continued a strong late-season stretch by upsetting the visiting Philadelphia Union 4-0 on Saturday. UPDATE (Feb. 24) – Charlotte FC have acquired forward Daniel Rios from Nashville SC in exchange for $350,000 in General Allocation Money plus another $150,00 GAM in incentives, sources tell MLSsoccer.com. There is no doubt that the Charlotte FC fans had an impact on the match.

The outcome prevented the Union ( , 64 points) from clinching the Eastern Conference title. Philadelphia has a home game Oct. 9 against Toronto to conclude the regular season. The MLS Player of the Week presented by Continental Tire is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting.

With their win over Philadelphia, Charlotte become the third expansion team since 2005 to win double-digit games at home in their first season (Atlanta United in 2017 and CF Montréal in 2012). The Crown are just the third expansion team, excluding the shootout era, to win at least 13 games in their inaugural season (Atlanta United and LAFC). Additionally, Charlotte’s 41 points are the most by an expansion team since LAFC’s 57 in 2018. CHARLOTTE, NC (Friday, February 25, 2022) – Charlotte FC today announced the Club has acquired forward Daniel Ríos from Nashville SC in exchange for $350,000 in 2022 GAM with an additional $150,000 in 2023 GAM if certain incentives are met. “He’s a guy that I’ve been really impressed with, the last three matches he has played fantastic...

CHARLOTTE – Interim head coach Christian Lattanzio put his trust in Daniel Ríos once again as the Mexican striker made his fourth straight start. Ríos’s paid back his coach’s trust in him with a remarkable four-goal performance which extended Charlotte FC’s winning streak to three in a row. After three losses to start the season, the Crown had won their last two, their first two, at home before the 0-2 reality check in Pennsylvania.

His goals in the 24', 54', 72', and 90'+1' set up a must-win match for Charlotte FC on Wednesday against the Columbus Crew. CLTFC sits four points off the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with two games left to play. The match originally scheduled for July 30 was suspended due to severe weather and will resume in the 16th minute with the score still 0-0. Charlotte FC scored their first ever goal in history against rival Atlanta United this past weekend.

CHARLOTTE, NC (Monday, October 3, 2022) – Charlotte FC striker Daniel Rios was voted MLS Player of the Week after scoring all four goals in a 4-0 thrashing of Eastern Conference leading Philadelphia Union to keep the Crown's playoff hopes alive. Per league policy, the game will recommence with the same players on the field and substitutes available as when the match was initially postponed. But it was Charlotte who struck again nine minutes into the second half. Jozwiak was a Union buster all night for the Crown, on the dribble, finding space, feeding lethal passes to the hot foot of Rios, and he did it again in the 54th minute. With roar of the Charlotte supporters on top of them in the East End, the pair harassed the Philly defense into several turnovers on the left side of the goal with Jozwiak deftly putting the ball on the striker’s foot. Rios danced to his right around defender Leon Flach and nutmegged Blake to put Charlotte up 2-0.

It got even better for Charlotte two minutes into added time when McKinze Gaines took a flicked pass from Santos down the right and put it across the goalmouth where Rios claimed his fourth goal. When tested, Sisniega held his ground, as did the men in front, deflecting or blocking Union incursions. Even then, this was against the best Philadelphia story to date since the club’s debut in 2010. The Union already had two more wins (18) than their top season to date, which was 16 in 2019 when they finished third in the East.

First, you’ll need to find a fertile patch of land and place some fields on it. But the fields can’t be too big (see below) or else they won’t get planted in time for the crop to grow and you’ll miss out on an entire year of farming. You’ll also need to make sure you have farmers available during the times of year when farm work needs to be done — mostly just in the autumn.

The City of Angels is also home to some outrageously decadent versions, most notably from West Hollywood’s iconic The Griddle.

The specifics that particular unit of measurement aren’t worth getting into right now (and they’re confusing as hell). For our purposes, know that a single family working on a farm can manage — plow, plant, and harvest — about 2⁄3 morgen per year. Farming in Manor Lords takes a lot of work to understand and it’s hard to make it work properly. There’s a lot to consider — from soil fertility to acreage (morgenage?) to processing the crops — and it can be really frustrating and time-consuming if you mess something up. With this technique, you can revamp your dresser into a statement piece worthy of a Pottery Barn catalog.

Mango, strawberry, kiwi, blackberry, banana, chocolate syrup topped with whipped cream. Spinach, mushroom, zucchini, red pepper in a roasted garlic sauce. When you click on a field, you’ll get a menu that allows you to pick what type of crop to grow the next year — wheat, flax, or barley. You also have the option to not grow anything at all and to let the field lie fallow.

Setting a field to fallow for a year restores that field’s fertility. Starting in the autumn, the family assigned to a farm will look for a nearby field (basically any field in the region) and start to plow it. Plowing is followed by sowing, which also has to happen in autumn. If a field isn’t plowed and sowed by the time winter starts in December that field will be fallow for the year — you’ll also get a notification about it. Like we mentioned above, a family can harvest, plow, and sow about 0.6 morgen during a season. When you’re ready to start farming, you’ll also need a farmhouse (3 timber).

How a Traditional Rickhouse Works Bourbon Whiskey Our Native Spirit

rick house

In a traditional 9-floor rackhouse, there is the capacity to store 27 barrels if there are a total of 3 barrels on each floor. The barrels situated at the middle of the rackhouse are termed ‘center cut’. The spirit maturation rate stays constant in these barrels and experiences only the slightest fluctuations compared to those placed in extreme locations. The seventh to ninth floors of a traditional rackhouse are considered to be top-of-a-rackhouse barrel locations. Many distilleries take advantage of the fact that the whiskey matures differently depending on the type of warehouse used and the external conditions.

Popular Rickhouse Bourbons

The open-top nature of a rickhouse allows the warm air to escape, allowing fresh air at the bottom to rise up as its temperature increases. The constant slow circulation gradually removes moisture from the barrels making flavorful bourbon. The spirits with bold flavors and a particular in-mouth feel are usually placed at the mid high and high storage locations. These barrels can also be mixed together to give a more consistent taste.

Aging

rick house

A bourbon rickhouse, also known as a whiskey warehouse or aging warehouse, is a large, multi-story building used for the storage and aging of bourbon barrels. These structures are essential in the bourbon-making process as they provide the ideal environment for the whiskey to mature. Rickhouses are typically made of wood and are designed to allow natural temperature fluctuations and airflow, which interact with the aging bourbon, influencing its flavor and character over time.

In the summer, windows on upper floors are often opened and you’ll feel a lot of air movement on a hot day. Since our buildings are not climate controlled, we use our tasting expertise to mingle barrels from different parts of the rickhouses to create consistent taste profiles. As the air outside moves from low to high, it shifts the atmospheric pressure inside, producing airflow that circulates throughout the barrels. Heat transfers throughout the rickhouse by the process of convection, in which air moves because some parts are heavier than others. In the summer, windows on upper floors are often opened and you'll feel a lot of air movement on a hot day.

Some spirits like whiskey will spend years in the same rickhouse before they are ever bottled. Oftentimes, the distiller will use different kinds of wood in order to get specific flavors out of their final product. Some of these include wood, brick, stone, concrete, tin, and metal. This leads to lower evaporation losses, or angel’s share, and a more consistent maturation process throughout the entire dunnage house. In the heart of Kentucky, where the rolling hills meet the Kentucky River, lies a timeless treasure that encapsulates the spirit of bourbon’s heritage.

Constructed around 1895, this rare architectural gem was a surviving testament to what was once the heart of the Anderson-Nelson Distillery Company, Kentucky's colossal bourbon distilling empire. The nearby streets became the main service routes for the facilities, enveloped by the evolving landscape of industrial complexes and the charming Irish Hill residential area. The Anderson-Nelson Distilling conglomerate spanned 35 acres, boasting a capacity to house over 735,000 barrels of Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey. Post-Prohibition, the distillery operated for another 46 years, adapting to evolving market demands and competition. But by 1979, this historical beacon of bourbon production, once the world's largest, had to close its doors. Today, as the bourbon industry enjoys a renaissance, there's a renewed appreciation for the architectural marvels tied to its past.

On the other hand, since barrels placed on the bottom of a rackhouse experience a slower rate of evaporation, the water molecules entering the barrel make the spirit more dilute. The concentration of the flavors inside a barrel can be affected by the rate of evaporation. This is because the barrels placed on the top of the rackhouse experience an accelerated evaporation rate.

The dunnage barrel may also have become more influenced by the environment it was placed in. Rickhouses are primarily made of wood, brick, stone or metal and constructed to be about seven stories high. Their overall size (height and depth) and construction materials significantly impact the temperature consistency inside the rickhouse, as most are not climate controlled. The fluctuation of temperatures, especially during the winter and summer months, is what pulls the spirits in and out of the wooden barrel. This process is what gives the spirit its color, flavor, and aromas.

Why do Rickouses Matter to the Bourbon Industry?

These spirits can easily be blended together to create a unique house style. Sample 3 different barrels of approximately the same age, one from a dunnage house and the other from a rickhouse to really understand the difference. As we stand before The Anderson-Nelson Distillery Rickhouse, we are not just looking at wooden beams and bricks. We are gazing into the heart of bourbon’s past, feeling the whispers of history and the potential for a vibrant future. This extraordinary structure, now safeguarded for generations to come, serves as a reminder of the indelible bond between Louisville and bourbon. It’s a symbol of craftsmanship, innovation, and the enduring spirit of bourbon enthusiasts worldwide.

The barrels in a rickhouse are typically aged anywhere from two to six years, which gives the whiskey time to mature in a controlled environment. The original patent filed by Mr. Stitzel refers to “racks for tiering barrels” with no mention of the word rick. Barrel aging is where a lot of the magic happens by imparting flavor and color from the charred oak barrels. The barrel and the method of aging is a critical component of any bourbon.

Where each barrel is placed has a great impact on the aging and maturation process of the spirit. Here are the subtle differences between the features of rackhouses/rickhouses and dunnage houses. Located in the heart of the Financial District of San Francisco, Rickhouse™, has become a staple for cocktail and whiskey knowledge and craft for the past 10 years. Its design is inspired and built from old whiskey barrels, staves and original charred brick from pre-1906 earthquake.

From three, five, to even seven storeys, and you’ll see that the aging process differs on each level. The temperature swings in dunnage houses are less extreme as compared to other types of aging facilities. The single storey structure, vs a multi-storey structure also helps maintain temperature stability. Scotch whisky distilleries often operate dunnage houses, which are traditional, low warehouses with an earthen floor and stone walls. An old-school rickhouse can hold and age 18,000 to 20,000 barrels, while modern rickhouses are capable of housing 55,000+ barrels. An average rickhouse can have 90 wooden racks, with a capacity that increases with the size of the rickhouse.

Imagine you want to relax with a long soak and you are surrounded by at least a dozen pairs of bosoms.

Aging

They sit on seven different sites across Bourbon Country, and hold between 10,000 and 60,000 barrels each. So you can see in the diagram that there are 3 barrels on each floor – we call those the one high, two high, and the three high. Barrels on the inside of the house age differently than on the outside as well, since the barrels on the outside get more heat closer to the walls. So where you put the barrels effects those barrels in different ways. If you want to buy rickhouse bourbon or whiskey, you have to look beyond the “rickhouse brand” gimmick to seek actual quality.

Most rickhouses have several stories and lack climate controls like heat and air conditioning. Wood and metal rickhouses experience big, dramatic temperature swings each day, particularly on the upper levels, while brick and stone rickhouses have a little more temperature stability. Unlike a dunnage house, rickhouses can be made of a wide rage of materials, including wood, stone (like those at Woodford Reserve), brick, or even metal. Buffalo Trace alone has rickhouses made from wood, tin, brick, and concrete.

I explained I was not sure, but specially constructed buildings known as rickhouses, rackhouses, or warehouses are in use to store and age bourbon. If the whiskey is aged for less than four years, its age must be stated on the bottle. Whether you’re building large production houses for master brewers or tasting rooms, aging houses for premium quality spirits or full capacity aging warehouses. We guarantee fine quality and timely construction for all structures. A rickhouse is a warehouse where whiskey barrels are stacked in multiple racks for uniform aging and thorough ventilation. Stacks are called ricks and a rickhouse is effectively a warehouse that holds multiple stacks of whiskey barrels.

A mega rickhouse usually ages over 30,000 barrels, while a small-scale rickhouse holds less than 18,000 barrels. Aside from size classification, these facilities are also divided between metal rickhouses and brick rickhouses. A bourbon rickhouse is a warehouse where bourbon barrels age while stacked on top of each other in 40-to-90-story racks. It is pretty similar to a whiskey rickhouse but houses and ages bourbon only. This makes rickhouses better not just for the consumer but also for the distillery.

By law, all bourbon must be aged in charred new oak barrels before it can be called straight bourbon— but after that, the regulations are fairly flexible about what happens to the barrel afterward. Let’s take a look at how rickhouses impact the bourbon distillery process. A rickhouse is a tall rectangular structure built of either wood or steel. It is designed to store and age distilled spirits, usually bourbon. They are usually located in close proximity to the distillation process so that the aging process can be closely monitored. Some of the oldest rickhouses date back to the late 1700s and were mainly used for storing and aging whiskey in Ireland.

The Cheesecake Factory Restaurant in SouthPark Mall

The Cheesecake Factory is a beautiful restaurant. It reminds me of pictures I have seen of restaurants and buildings in Italy. My wife and I have been trying to eat at The Cheesecake Factory in Charlotte, NC for years. Every time we would try, there would be a long wait.

SouthPark Mall

Eventually, they moved to Los Angeles and gave the business one more shot. It was a success and she was now selling her famous cheesecakes to restaurants all over Los Angeles. Charlotte wasn’t without its restaurant closures in July either. Bonterra closed in SouthPark late last month, ending its 24-year run in Charlotte. And Dogwood Southern Table & Bar, also in SouthPark, will close in August, with celebrity chef David Burke buying its lease and assets to open a new concept there.

Restaurant Bites: The Cheesecake Factory to open, SouthPark spots closing

My name is Ronnie and it is my goal to bring you the best Southern-inspired recipes, reviews, and restaurants from the South and beyond. To be honest we almost did not go because so many people told us the food was not good but the dessert was. I thought both of our dishes was fantastic!. Ronnie, I've found that restaurants with huge menus are usually not very good.

Dessert

According to The Cheesecake Factory Website, it all started in the 1940s when Evelyn Overton found a recipe in her local Detroit newspaper. This recipe inspired her to make the Original Cheesecake that we all know and love today. Enjoy the high-energy atmosphere seven days a week, serving appetizers, lunch, dinner, late night dining, full bar, Saturday & Sunday brunch, and curbside To-Go service. In a different part of the Charlotte area, local chef Jim Noble just opened his fourth location of Bossy Beulah’s Chicken Shack in Fort Mill. That’s as local franchisees brought the region’s third Slim Chickens to Indian Trail. They really make the best cheesecake but I also have to say the food we ate beforehand was really good as well.

Curbside

There are also new-to-market additions in Charlotte. One such concept, Puerta, will be opening later this month, paying homage to Mexican food and spirits in Elizabeth. Let’s be honest here, most people come for dessert right? On the way out, they have a huge counter where you can order any type of cheesecake you can imagine. I got Fresh Strawberry Cheesecake and my wife got Oreo Dream Extreme Cheesecake.

The Cheesecake Factory is my one exception to that rule. I've loved everything I've ever had there. We don't have one nearby, but I've eaten at various ones while traveling. Two of my favorites are the Chicken Piccata (with mashed potatoes instead of angel hair pasta) and the Pasta Da Vinci.

Food items range from hamburgers to southern comfort food, to Asian-inspired dishes. Choose from more than 250 dishes made fresh from scratch every day and more than 40 legendary cheesecakes and desserts. Though not locally based, The Cheesecake Factory is set to open its second Charlotte-area restaurant this month at Birkdale Village in Huntersville. That 2,500-square-foot location will mark the fifth for the brand. Charlotte brewery Resident Culture is also putting its next location in uptown, at The Market at 7th Street. It plans to open that 300-square-foot bar — its third location in Charlotte — this month.

The People’s Market, for starters, is teeing up its second location in Charlotte about a year after making a revival in the Elizabeth neighborhood. The Cheesecake Factory menu features more than 200 menu selections made fresh each day. The Cheesecake Factory doesn’t just serve cheesecake. The menu is very diverse and should offer something to please even the strictest palate.

We stood up next to the wall and a nice couple walked up and handed us their pager. They said you will only have a five-minute wait. So we waited for about five minutes and sure enough, they called us back.

For instance, I ordered Chicken Madeira, one of their specialty dishes. My wife ordered Orange Chicken, an Asian-inspired dish. When you walk into the restaurant, it is truly breathtaking. I do not believe I have ever been to a more beautiful chain restaurant before. We walked up and added our names to the list, It is going to be an hour wait the lady said.

I've also been in touch with Harley Street's Dr Sam Bunting for her expert opinion on the benefits of using an eye cream, as well as her top tips on how to tackle puffy eyes. Those who have lighter skin tones might notice their dark circles looking green or blue, like the color of veins. To help counteract that, Bobbi Brown created her fan-favorite Under Eye Corrector, which is available in pink- or peach-based shades. The water-, sweat-, and humidity-resistant formula is designed to be layered underneath concealer and foundation for hours of wear. According to our tester, the color payoff is excellent, and she didn’t have a hard time finding a “perfect match.” Just be sure to wear a moisturizer or eye cream before applying; she noticed the product settling into lines after a few hours. Green color correctors are known for their magic ability to neutralize redness related to acne and rosacea.

The Emotion-Boosting Molecules in ‘More Sex’ are proven to enhance feelings of seduction. Sensual Sandalwood Oil Caledonia, seductive Sexual Accord, addictive Leather Accord and velvety Musk have the most magical chemistry, intertwining to create a sexy and provocative scent that brings excitement to winter nights. Fall victim to any of these no-nos, and there’s a good chance you won’t get the coverage you want out of your concealer. So finely milled, it's undetectable on the skin yet has the setting power of a heavy duty powder. Watching the demonstrations I've started using Charlotte's placement too, for lifting across the face, and it's really elevated concealer to a key player in my daily five-minute-makeup.

It’s a sensual story that embodies that feeling of being hot under the collar despite the winter frost. The Magic Vanish is available in four different shades, and Charlotte Tilbury’s website has a handy ‘Complex Matrix’ that will help you find your perfect shade – undertones and all. If you wear foundation, apply concealer on top of it to help reduce the appearance of blemishes, redness and pigmentation. As for finishes, “If you have normal to dry skin, a radiant finish concealer is a great option for keeping the under-eye area hydrated, preventing the formula from settling into fine lines. For oily or blemish-prone skin, I like a mattifying formula with full coverage and long wearability to keep excess shine at bay.

As the name suggests, this color-correcting formula from Charlotte Tilbury is pure sorcery. Each of the four shades—pink, peach, orange, and red—looks intimidating at first (understandably so) but actually transforms the look of under eyes after a few pats of a makeup sponge. The warm colors work to even out dull, purplish skin, thus, covering up dark circles.

Specifically designed for the delicate skin around your eyes, new advanced formulas can transform the area from dull, dark and puffy to smooth, soft, refreshed and revitalised. Applying powder as the final step will help set your concealer and provide crease resistance and control shine. Depending on your preference and desired finish, you can use either a pressed powder, like Charlotte Tilbury Mini Airbrush Flawless Finish Setting Powder or Quiet on Set Setting Powder, or a loose powder, such as Dior Forever Cushion Powder.

I've included options suitable for a range of budget and skincare concerns, so there's something for everyone. Over the years I've gone from full coverage foundation to light, tried your BBs, your CCs and your tints, and finally reached a point where... I've embraced my scarring and blemishes for the sake of my bare natural skin, which I really think is hard to beat. Darlings, winter has such a strong association with scent from burning bonfires and fresh pine to holiday recipes and festive spices.

The Charlotte Tilbury concealer couldn’t have come into my life at a better time. The brand describes it as 'shape-wear for the eyes and face', and it really does lift the skin up, playing with light to mask the depth of eye bags. The formula credits clever mica-based pearls for creating a light diffusing effect, soft-focussing silica for smoothing the skin's appearance and glow peptides for reflecting light. Instead of settling into fine lines or sitting on top of your skin like a mask, this concealer acts more like a thin veil that tightens and blurs everything at once. (Do people still say pantyhose?) I watched Charlotte apply a copious amount of this concealer on one hand and couldn’t believe the difference.

Roche has a five-year-old daughter, and so I ask if she hopes she will grow up to share Helen's relationship with her own body. Her father, like Helen's, was an engineer - he built factories for Mars in Germany - and her parents divorced when she was five. "Like all children of divorce," her poignant prologue reads, "I want to see my parents back together." She made them both promise not to read the book, and has since wondered whether subconsciously it was the protagonist's preoccupation with divorce she wanted to protect them from. Let’s face it; who of us hasn’t checked the tissue after a sneeze, peered into the toilet bowl, picked at a scab to see what was underneath?

charlotte roche

British-German television presenter and author / From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

charlotte roche

I can only wish that the young women who think “Wetlands” sounds intriguing will head to the erotica section of the nearest women’s bookstore first. Laid out on a hospital bed, bottom bare to the breeze, Helen ruminates at length on her body and its products. Occasionally, some oafish doctor comes in and says something oafish (this part is quite believable). Sometimes, Helen is in pain and sometimes she is hungry. But mostly, she thinks, in the great German tradition.

What to Read

We know that finding the right doctor or provider is important to your health. That’s why we want to ensure you have confidence in the provider profiles and listings you see on WebMD Care. Our provider data is sourced from the physicians themselves as well as publicly available databases.

"At the moment I just feel the pressure so strongly, and I don't understand why it's there. So I want to talk about it." At public readings women often tell her they daren't have sex with their husbands if they have not shaved their legs for one day. Roche's mother was a feminist, the sort of mum who talked about contraception and allowed her daughter to have sex at home from an early age. No one has ever brought it up in an interview, either. When I started out as a presenter, I wanted to do television in a way in which no one has ever done television before.

Feuchtgebiete, which translates as Wetlands, or Moist Patches, is the debut novel from Charlotte Roche. As it opens, we find 18-year-old narrator Helen Memel in hospital, after an accident shaving her intimate parts. The remainder of the book plays out entirely on the proctology ward where, in between ruminating on her haemorrhoids and sexual proclivities, Helen asks her male nurse to photograph her wound, tries to seduce him, and hides under her bed to masturbate. She has an insatiable, childlike curiosity about the sight and smell and taste of bodies, especially her own. Hygiene, she reflects, "is not a major concern of mine".

But people often assume it was something I did as a sort of glamorous part-time job to support my writing career – that’s a very German approach, perhaps. I used to read a lot in my early teens, even some of the classics, but it was all ruined for me by those German classes in which we had to take writing apart. And now that I’m a mother – my child was born five years ago – it’s just very difficult to find the time for reading. The only book I have read recently is the The Great Gatsby and even that took me almost three years. Roche, 30, was born in High Wycombe, but moved with her British parents to Germany as a young child, and has been a national celebrity there since her teens, presenting music and culture shows.

Combine EditionsCharlotte Roche’s books

As with Chuck Palahniuk, there's a consistent - and somewhat formulaic - endeavour here to gross you out. Helen is keen to inform us, repeatedly, that every squeezable, drainable, detachable substance produced by the body (hers, her lovers', or yours) can be and should be eaten - except hair, which she shaves off weekly, and ear wax, for which she shows unexpected disdain. There's no mention of belly button fluff either - but blackheads, snot, puke, pus, scabs, tears, smegma, eyelid crumbs, vaginal discharges, menstrual blood and other gunk are all acceptable fodder, especially when dried to a crust under the fingernails. "I'm my own garbage disposal. Bodily secretion recycler," she tells us proudly. The passage in which she rips open her own wound to prolong her stay in hospital is even more challenging for the weak-stomached reader. I’m convinced that in contemporary society a lot of women have a very messed-up attitude to their own bodies.

More From the Los Angeles Times

Wetlands, Roche says, had originally been intended as a serious polemic against the tyranny of female sexual hygiene. Unsurprisingly, Helen’s obsessions turn out to be a reaction to her parents’ divorce, and to her parents themselves. Her mother is so averse to bodily function that she claims not to have bowel movements, while her father is unashamed to give her a get-well “hemorrhoid pillow.” Neither talks about her mother’s attempt to kill herself and Helen’s brother when Helen was a child.

Providers are not able to remove or modify reviews on their own. Reviews can only be removed after an internal review by our customer service team. Generally, Wetlands touches upon a number of taboo topics not only in the sexual arena but also those that can be found in the society at large, particularly in dysfunctional families.

Wetlands opens in a hospital room after an intimate shaving accident. It gives a detailed topography of Helen's hemorrhoids, continues into the subject of anal intercourse and only gains momentum from there, eventually reaching avocado pits as objects of female sexual satisfaction and – here is where the debate kicks in – just possibly female empowerment. Clearly the novel has struck a nerve, catching a wave of popular interest in renewing the debate over women's roles and image in society.

Her debut novel, Wetlands, which was published in her native Germany in 2008 and went on to become a worldwide bestseller, began with an 11-page description of the protagonist accidentally slicing into her haemorrhoids while shaving. Wrecked starts with a similarly detailed account of oral sex, which could well be described as "blow-by-blow". But I suspect such depths did not occur to Roche, who insists that “Wetlands” is a celebration of the female body. She does seem to have hitched a ride on the zeitgeist — the book is being translated into 27 languages.

Locarno Film Festival Review: Is 'Wetlands' the Most Disgusting Coming of Age Movie Of All Time?.

The presence of the parents provokes corny psychology lessons on dysfunctional families, and Helen's originality and ingenuity seem less remarkable when attributed to family trauma. Why doesn't Roche bravely proclaim her heroine's outlook NORMAL? Let Helen be promiscuous, impetuous and insubordinate because she wants to be, not because there's anything wrong with her or her childhood. Her previous hospital stays include a bout of appendicitis she faked in order to postpone a French exam, and a sterilisation her mother knows nothing about. She's pretty angry at her mother, not just about the divorce, but about other crimes too, from mild maternal interference to suicide attempts.

Evidently cleanliness for health is a myth, because other than her unusual condition, she is incredibly hearty and resilient. The major part of Wetlands is made up of Helen's thoughts, reminiscences and sexual fantasies while confined to her hospital bed. A sexually active woman since she was fifteen, she has had sex with many men and boys and describes herself as continuously randy. Shortly after her 18th birthday she had herself sterilised without telling her parents about it. To that end, “Wetlands” is narrated by 18-year-old Helen Memel, who has been suffering from an anal lesion after an intimate shaving incident. The entire book takes place on the proctology unit as she recovers from surgery.

Any doctor or provider who claims their profile by verifying themselves can update their information and provide additional data on their specialties, education, accepted insurances, conditions they treat, and procedures they perform. It is easy to be put off by the hype surrounding this novel. The author, Charlotte Roche, is a television personality in Germany, host of an MTV-type show.

She has no qualms about public bathrooms, the toilet seats or even the floors, and she is proud that she rarely bathes. “Obviously that means I never wash my face either. I think it’s overrated anyway.” Everything she does is a test to see whether the old wives’ tales are true and if bacterium is really such a terrible thing.

This will also give you time to determine what neighborhood you want to live in, your budget, and the amenities you want. As with all rentals, there are important things to consider before renting a house from a private landlord. Below, we cover those specifics, the process of finding prime options, and everything you need for your rental search.

While you can look for private listings on platforms such as Facebook housing groups or Craigslist, doing this is risky. On these platforms, it’s far likelier that you’ll run into fraudsters who run fake ads and then ask you for money to view the listing or a “security deposit” to secure it—before disappearing.
